Spread the love

This Smoked Salmon Dip is one of my favorites to make for gatherings and potlucks because it’s really quick and easy to make, and everyone loves it and asks for the recipe.

If you want to make something that everyone raves for but don’t want to spend hours cooking, my friend, this is the recipe you need to make. Literally everything here is from the store, and you just have to do some chopping and mixing. No cooking except for less than a minute of microwaving to soften the cream cheese. Whenever I bring it to a potluck, it always finishes within a few minutes. I never get to come home with any leftovers, so I always make sure to leave some at home for me, hahaa.

Making a Big Batch of Smoked Salmon Dip

Let’s say you need to serve this at a bigger party. There’s no need to make any changes to the recipe. Use the same method I use here. Just multiply the ingredients.

In case you’re wondering if you can replace smoked salmon with cooked salmon (I mean, in this economy, I definitely would), please refer to my other Salmon dip recipe, where I use leftover or freshly cooked salmon. This recipe is one of my all-time favorites, with many visitors per month for a very good reason. If you love salmon and a little bit of Asian flair, you’d love that recipe as well.

Which smoked Salmon to choose

There are mainly two types of smoked salmon that you find in supermarkets. Cold-smoked salmon and hot-smoked salmon.

Cold-smoked salmon is the one that comes thinly sliced. They are silky, moist, and soft. almost similar to raw salmon in texture. Served cold, typically with cream cheese and bagels or crackers. Although you can use this to make dips, this is not the type of salmon you need for this particular recipe.

For this smoked salmon dip recipe, you need to buy hot-smoked salmon. This looks like a cooked piece of salmon. It’s flaky and firm. They are great as salad toppers, or use with pasta or cream sauces. They come in different flavors varying from plain to honey-glazed, maple-glazed, pepper-spiced, Cajun-spiced, and many more. I usually go for maple glaze or honey glazed for this.

How to serve the Dip

Anything that you usually serve with a dip works for this. My favorite is to serve with toasted baguette slices, crackers, or bagel chips.

You can also serve them with celery, cucumber rounds, or carrots for a healthier option.

The smoked salmon dip can also make a great sandwich spread.

  1. Remove the salmon skin from the smoked salmon. Then break the salmon into small flakes using two forks.  If your smoked salmon is hard and dry, use the food processor to chop it finely.

  2. Add the cream cheese to a microwave-friendly bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds until the cream cheese is softer. Whip it a little bit with a fork so it's smooth and lump-free.

  3. To cream cheese, add salmon, sour cream, dill, spring onions, paprika, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Mix well. Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary.

  4. Transfer to a serving dish. Optional: Garnish with dill and sprinkles of paprika. You can serve immediately or keep it refrigerated.
