Spread the love

If you visited a Hibachi restaurant and fell in love with their Yum Yum sauce, this Recipe is for you, my friend. All you need is some common pantry ingredients, and you can whip this up in less than 5 minutes. It’s unbelievably easy to make and soooo good with meat and seafood, and many other dishes.

Yum yum sauce, as much as it sounds like an Asian sauce, is actually invented in America. You might also know it as shrimp sauce or hibachi sauce. Yum yum sauce is creamy, umami and little sweet too. Now adays you can buy premade yum yum sauce bottles from grocery stores too but trust me the home-made version is much better tasting and you can easily customize it to your taste as well.

Ingredients Info:

Mayo – Yum Yum Sauce is a mayonnaise-based recipe, so this is a must. I usually use regular mayo, but you can also use Japanese Kawpie mayo if you prefer that. I find Kewpie mayo to be a little saltier than regular mayo, so if you are planning to use this, you can skip adding extra salt to the recipe.

Ketchup – ketchup helps to add a slightly tangy, sweet flavor as well as color to the sauce. If you don’t like ketchup, you can also use tomato paste as a substitute, but cut the amount in half, since tomato paste is highly concentrated.

Melted butter – this adds a wonderful buttery, nutty flavor to the sauce. Also, make the sauce very smooth and glossy. I use salted butter.

Heavy cream – Heavy cream helps to make the sauce a little thinner without watering it down. You can use half and half, too. And make the sauce extra creamy and smooth.

Garlic powder – for a little hint of garlic flavor. Do not add too much, though, as this can overpower.

Paprika – helps with color, mostly, but also adds flavor. If you like a little extra kick, add a little bit of cayenne pepper as well. I do not add cayenne since I use sriracha.

Sriracha – I love adding sriracha to this yum yum sauce recipe for a little bit of heat, as well as to add some tangy flavor. Since we add a very little bit, it does not overpower the creamy flavor of the sauce.

Sugar – To add a little bit of sweetness to the sauce and to also balance out the tangy flavor from Sriracha and ketchup.

Salt – this is optional, but I do like to add just a pinch of salt, and I think it enhances all the other flavors. If you’re planning to serve the yum yum sauce with something salty, then I do recommend skipping salt.

What goes with Yum Yum Sauce?

This sauce is so versatile and can serve with many dishes. My favorite way is with shrimp tempura or grilled shrimp. Goes well with steak or chicken and also with vegetables. Especially with anything made in tempura style.

I love it with fries too and also with fried chicken and fish and chips. Great with grilled/pan-fried salmon as well.

You can also use yum yum sauce to add over fried rice. Goes amazing with wraps and sandwiches as well.
